Delayed Harvest and Large Stocked Trout Streams: The sulphur nymphs are very active in some of our large streams, especially Big Stoney Creek and the Smith River. When these streams have a normal water level, a good tactic is to enter the stream right below the riffle and cast a two or three nymph rig across stream. Allow them to sink, as the current pushes them downstream. Use a slow Leisenring Lifting rod motion to swim the nymphs up toward the surface. This is at its best for the first forty feet down into the pool. My favorite nymphs for this are the Murray's Sulphur Nymph size 14 and size 16 and Mr. Rapidan Brown Soft Hackle Nymph size 16.
