Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 1, 2021

This picture reminds me of the special times that I have hiked and camped in the Shenandoah National Park to get the best fishing over a 3 day weekend. We still have many Epeorus pleuralis duns and spinners on the stream. The fragile little blue quill mayflies may be present in very heavy hatches over the next few weeks. Unfortunately during cold days these little duns have trouble drying their wings to fly off the stream. These helpless flies are shunted to the back eddies where the trout gorge themselves on them. Fishing a Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14 and the Blue Quill Dry size 16 will help you match these hatches.

For more information on these streams--access, hatch charts, reading the water and more, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.
