Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 27, 2019

The Blue Quill mayflies are starting to hatch and this dry fly in sizes 16 and 18 are very effective especially in the back eddies on cold days. Some days this dry with a Blue Quill Nymph size 16 on a 2ft 6X dropper below it will catch more trout than the drys. Presently there are many Epeorus pleuralis adults coming off in the riffles. A Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 will catch many of the trout feeding here. During the mornings when the stream is cool, I do well by fishing a Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 as a dropper under the dry.

Stream Conditions: You will have better water levels by coming in off the Skyline Drive. Currently the central section from milepost 32 to 65 is open.  These conditions can change frequently with snow and wind storms.  To check the status of the Skyline Drive please call 540-999-3500, option 1, option 1 for the latest update before heading to these streams.  The lower portion of the steams are carrying full water levels right now but by the weekend they should be better.

Recommended Gear: I am using a 7 1/2ft 5X Classic Leader on a 2 to 4 weight fly rod--preferably 8ft or shorter.
