Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 3, 2020

Earlier this week I rode around and looked at several of the Shenandoah National Park streams hoping to get in a little fishing while checking the conditions.  I was amazed at how much water the lower boundary Park streams were carrying from the recent rains and thunderstorms.  Therefore, to get the best fishing, water levels, and water temperatures you will want to enter the streams from the headwaters or off the Skyline Drive.

With the cooler nights and the rich springs high in the mountains, this is prompting good caddisfly hatches.  The Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis size 16 in black or olive works well with this hatch. Fish these on a Classic Knotted Tapered 6X leader.

With the holiday weekend coming up, I suspect extra people will be hiking, sightseeing, and fishing on these streams so just be careful that you do not get behind someone fishing.  Often what they didn't catch they have already spooked.

My book, Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park, covers the streams with the access.
