Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing Report - May 20, 2021

The sculpin minnows are not schooling minnows but I remember as a youngster seining them to fish with them. There were always large numbers below the riffles. Where the current is fast or the water is over four feet deep, I catch more bass with a sink tip III line when fishing sculpin streamers. My favorite flies to use are the Shenk's Sculpin size 4, Murray's Madtom Sculpin size 4, Magnum Darter size 4, and Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite size 4.  Swim these slowly along the stream bottom from the riffles downstream for the next 100 feet.

The water temperature is staying around the 60's so be sure to bring your chest high waders.  Both the North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are in great shape plus you can't beat the beautiful scenery at this time of year.
