Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 5, 2021

The streams are low and clear and the bass are very wary.  To prevent scaring the bass, I wade upstream and fish upstream with long casts. My favorite flies for these conditions are the Murray's Blue Dragon Deer Hair Bug and the Tapply Deer Hair Bass Bugs. I fish these on a 2X Leader along the shaded banks, retrieving them with a slow pull-pause-pull action.

The Murray's Dying Minnow (Dace) size 6 and Shenk's White Streamer size 6 have been productive this week as well.  Fish these downstream on a Bright Butt 9ft 2X Leader.

You will have better water levels by wading the South Fork of the Shenandoah River from the Bixler Bridge area, Seakfords Landing, or Foster's Landing.  For more information on these areas, check out my book Virginia's Blue Ribbon Streams or stop by the fly shop and we will show you these areas on our master map.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable.  I would concentrate on the Mount Jackson (around Meem's bottom) to Woodstock areas.  The downstream area of the Seven Bends State Park from the Lupton access has been doing well.   There is still a safety warning on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River from the Toms Brook area to the Strasburg town park.  For more information you can visit the Friends of the North Fork website.
