Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report -July 15, 2021

I like to float sections of the river that are 2 or 3 miles. I often float/fish downstream until I get to a nice looking area and then beach the boat and wade fish for a while. This way I am covering all areas of the river with different flies. The Shenandoah Chartreuse Chugger and Shenandoah Blue Popper in size 6 are productive along the shady banks. The Murray's Magnum Bluegill Streamer size 4 is productive in the open water. The Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite (Black) size 6 is great to fish in the riffles and the Murray's Crayfish is productive along the cobblestone bottoms.  With the 90 degree days we have had this week, you will get your best fishing early in the morning or the last 2 hours before dark. I fish all of these flies on a Bright Butt 9ft 2X or 3X Leader which has the built in indicator.

The spotty rains have helped the river levels some but they are still low and clear so wade carefully so you don't spook the fish.  The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable.  There are three dams on the North Fork that are not legal or safe to go around so typically most people wade this Fork.  There are a few areas that you can float with kayaks including the Seven Bends State Park in Woodstock, VA.  The South Fork is clear and fishable for both wading and floating.

If you need help on where to go, stop by the fly shop and check out our master map or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams that lists the game commission access places.
